Krysta gained a true sense of connection to the Greater Lehigh Valley through her experience on the TeenWorks™ board. She had the opportunity to meet and work with teens from all over the Lehigh Valley. TeenWorks™ supports youth who take on worthy projects to improve life in the region. Lehigh Valley Labor Unions sponsor TeenWorks™ through their Labor Partnership fund at the United Way of the Greater Lehigh Valley. Teens and union members serve side by side on a grant board as partners in policymaking, grant awarding and governance. TeenWorks™ is very proud of the great efforts of the many energetic and forward thinking teens that have enhanced the beauty and improved the quality of life in the Lehigh Valley. Krysta served on the TeenWorks™ board during her high school years and was co-chair her senior year. During her time on the board, teens stood before the board proposing worthy projects such as rebuilding Illick’s Mill, environmental improvements, holding senior proms for the elderly and the maintenance and beautification of churches, cemeteries, playgrounds and parks to name just a few. The Teenworks™ board held discussion on the merit of each project and awarded support funds and needed. TeenWorks™ provided a great learning experience for Krysta. She learned the power of cooperation as well as the generosity and the support found in the hearts of many local labor union members.
The TeenWorks Community Service Scholarship has been awarded in Krysta’s memory to a graduating high school student who has demonstrated high academic achievement, participated in community service projects, has recommendations from a member of the community and school staff and has submitted an essay highlighting leadership in conducting a community service event.
